There
is a central registry of all domain names on the Internet.
For your domain name to become a part of the registry,
your domain name needs to be added to that registry.
"Registering" a domain name means you are
associated with that domain name for e.g. www.domainname.com
for the period of the registration which is 12 months.
"Registering" a name means you own it, and
no one else can register that exact same name. It
is identified as a web address and called as the URL
– Uniform Resource Locator.
It
can also be defined as a unique alpha-numeric name used
to identify a particular computer (i.e. Web server or mail
server) on the Internet. Domain names allow Internet users
to type in a name, such as www.domainname.com
to identify a numeric address such as 200.100.100.10 which
is seldom used because such numeric URLs are hard for humans
to remember and are not particularly stable since networks
can get moved around.
